Schlage HandKey Integration


Overview

This document outlines the two wiring schemes and software setup for configuring the Schlage HandKey Integration for Access It! Universal.

Access It! Universal Licensing
The following licensing option must be enabled within the Access It! Universal dongle and is a system wide license.

External Reader with HandKey Reader

A card and / or PIN must be presented to the external reader before the HandKey reader will request biometric verification.

This adds a second layer of security for high risk areas.

HandKey Reader Only

When not using an external reader, the system will require a PIN to be entered on the HandKey keypad reader before the HandKey reader will request biometric verification.

This PIN is assigned within the cards properties.

Enrollment Reader

An enrollment reader is used to capture the biometric template. The enrollment reader is wired directly to a computers communication port via a RS-232 / RS-485 converter. The enrollment workstation must have Access It! Universal installed. The templates are then stored within the database and then downloaded to the SCPs.

Hardware / Wiring References
As shown in the figures above, the HK-GW panel is required for the HandKey integration. The HK-GW translates the template data to and from the SCP. A maximum of eight HandKey biometric readers may be wired to one HK-GW at a time.

To enable RS-485 2-wire support on certain HandKey units, you may need to open/close different jumpers. See the manufacture’s manual for detailed information.

Capturing a Cardholders Hand Template

To capture and store a cardholders hand template into Access It! Universal, follow the steps as outlined below. Refer to section entitled Enrollment Reader for information regarding connecting the enrollment reader to the computer.

  1. Run Access It! Universal
  2. Edit the Site properties for the site that the HK-GW gateway is to be used on
  3. Set the Biometric Reader Type to Schlage HandKey from the Site Options tab
  4. Click Save
    For the new settings to take effect, all users must log out and log in.
  5. Edit the Workstation properties for the computer that the enrollment reader is wired to
  6. Select Cardholder Enrollment tab
  7. Set the Comm Port accordingly
    Default Comm Port is 1.
  8. Set the Baud Rate accordingly
    Default Baud Rate is 9,600.
  9. Edit the SCP properties for the SCP that the HK-GW gateway is wired to
  10. Select the Biometrics tab and set the number of templates to be stored
    The card capacity of the SCP will decrease as the number of templates to be stored increases.
  11. Click Save
    The software will re-allocate the SCP memory and force a download.
  12. Within the cardholder properties, select the “Biometrics” tab
  13. Click Capture Template
  14. Place hand on HandKey reader as prompted
  15. Click Save
    The software will automatically download the newly stored template to the SCP.

Configuring the HandKey Reader within Access It! Universal

External Reader with HandKey Reader

Refer to the External Reader with HandKey section for information regarding wiring. It is assumed that steps one through eleven have been completed from the Capturing a Cardholders Hand Template with Access It! Universal section.

  1. Edit the SIO properties for the HK-GW gateway
    Be certain to open the correct SIO address that matches the actual dip switch settings of the HK-GW gateway.
  2. From the General tab, set the Model to Schlage HandKey Gateway
  3. Check the Device Installed option
  4. Set the Channel (IN) and (OUT) accordingly
  5. Select the Options tab and the Number of Readers accordingly
    The maximum number of readers that may be wired to a HK-GW gateway is eight.
  6. Click Save
  7. Edit the reader properties for the associated reader
  8. Select the Biometrics tab
  9. Check the Require Biometric Verification option
  10. Set the Gateway to the previously installed HK-GW gateway
  11. Set the Reader Number accordingly
  12. Click Save

HandKey Reader Only

Refer to the HandKey Reader Only section for information regarding wiring. It is assumed that steps one through eleven have been completed from the Capturing a Cardholders Hand Template with Access It! Enterprise section.

  1. Edit the SIO properties for the HK-GW gateway
    Be certain to open the correct SIO address that matches the actual dip switch settings of the HK-GW gateway.
  2. From the General tab, set the Model to Schlage HandKey Gateway
  3. Check the Device Installed option
  4. Set the Channel (IN) and (OUT) accordingly
  5. Select the Options tab and the Number of Readers accordingly
    The maximum number of readers that may be wired to a HK-GW gateway is eight.
  6. Click Save
  7. Edit the reader properties for the HandKey reader
  8. Select the Reader Settings tab
  9. Set the Reader Type to Proximity with Keypad
  10. Select the Biometrics tab
  11. Check the Require Biometric Verification option
  12. Set the Gateway to the previously installed HK-GW gateway
  13. Set the Reader Number accordingly
  14. Click Save
