Symptoms

When using SQL Server Replication, the error Runtime Error: Table '[dbo].[Servers]' into which you are trying to insert, update, or delete data is currently being upgraded or initialized for merge replication is logged in the Windows NT Event Log upon service start.

The Windows NT Event Log description contains: In the publisher data modifications are disallowed until the upgrade completes and snapshot has successfully run. On subscriber data modifications are disallowed until the upgrade completes or the initial snapshot has been successfully applied and it has synchronized with the publisher.

Cause A

It is possible that the MSmerge_disabledml stored procedures were not properly cleaned up during the automated SQL Replication Initialization process.

Resolution A

Disable or delete all MSmerge_disabledml stored procedures found in the AIUNIVERSAL database.

Cause B

If SQL Server has fully finished the Initial replication, and the error is still logged it most likely is caused by remnant of a previous replication subscription.

Resolution B

Backup all AIUniversal databases on Publisher and subscriber. Drop all replication publications and subscriptions. Afterwards run the SQL stored procedure sp_removedbreplication, and then rebuild SQL publication and subscriptions.
